Usual Adult Dose for Iron Deficiency Anemia

Initial dose: 510 mg, IV, over at least 15 minutes
Second dose: 510 mg, IV, over at least 15 minutes, 3 to 8 days after the initial dose

Comments:

• The patient should be reclined or semi-reclined during administration.
• Evaluate hematologic response at least one month after the second infusion.
• May be readministered for persistent or recurrent iron deficiency anemia.

Precautions

US BOXED WARNING: RISK FOR SERIOUS HYPERSENSITIVITY/ANAPHYLAXIS REACTIONS

• Fatal and serious hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis have occurred.
• Initial symptoms may include hypotension, syncope, unresponsiveness, and cardiac/cardiorespiratory arrest.
• Hypersensitivity reactions have occurred in patients who previously tolerated the product.

• Only administer when personnel and therapies for anaphylaxis/hypersensitivity are immediately available.
• Observe for symptoms of hypersensitivity during and for 30 minutes after administration, including monitoring of blood pressure and pulse.

Dialysis

Hemodialysis: No adjustment recommended.
Peritoneal dialysis: Data not available

Comments:

• Administer once blood pressure is stable and the patient has completed at least 1 hour of hemodialysis.
• Monitor for hypotension following each infusion.

Other Comments

Administration advice:

• The patient should be reclined or semi-reclined during administration.
• Allow at least 30 minutes before administering other medications that can cause hypersensitivity and/or hypotension (e.g. chemotherapy, monoclonal antibodies).

• Dilute in 50 to 200 mL of 0.9% sodium chloride or 5% dextrose solution.
• Immediate administration of diluted solution is recommended; may be stored up to 4 hours at controlled room temperature.
