Drug Class: Topical antibiotics
Usual Adult Dose for Burns - External
Apply to the affected area 1 to 2 times a day to a thickness of about 1/16 of an inch
Comments:
- This drug should be reapplied to any areas from which it has been removed by patient activity and immediately after hydrotherapy.
- Treatment should be continued until satisfactory healing has occurred or until burn site is ready for grafting.
- This drug should not be withdrawn from the therapeutic regimen while there remains the possibility of infection except if a significant adverse reaction occurs.
Use: As an adjunct for the prevention and treatment of wound sepsis in patients with second and third degree burns

Precautions
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
- Hypersensitivity to the active component or to any of the ingredients
- Use in pregnant women approaching or at term, premature infants, or newborns during the first 2 months of life
Safety and efficacy have not been established in patients younger than 18 years.

Administration advice:
- Care of burn patients should be initiated promptly and includes control of shock and pain.
- Burn wounds should be cleansed and debrided prior to use of this drug,
- The burned area should be covered with this drug at all times.
- Dressings are not necessary, however, if individual patients require dressings, they may be used.
Monitoring:
- Genitourinary: Check urine for sulfa crystals in patients being treated for burn wounds involving extensive areas of the body
- Hematologic: Monitor serum sulfa concentrations in patients being treated for burn wounds involving extensive areas of the body
- Renal: Monitor renal function in patients being treated for burn wounds involving extensive areas of the body
