Usual Adult Dose for Hypertension

Initial dose: 1 mg orally once a day at bedtime
Maintenance dose: Initial dose may be increased slowly as needed and appropriate; usual recommended dose is 1 to 5 mg orally once a day
Maximum dose: 20 mg/day

Comments: If blood pressure response is substantially diminished 24 hours after dosing, an increased dose or use of a twice a day regimen can be considered.

Usual Adult Dose for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Initial dose: 1 mg orally once a day at bedtime
Maintenance dose: Initial dose may be increased as needed and appropriate in a stepwise fashion to 2, 5, or 10 mg orally once a day
Maximum dose: 20 mg/day

Comments: A dose of 10 mg once a day is generally required to obtain a clinical response. A minimum of 4 to 6 weeks at this dose may be required to fully assess a patient's response.

Use: Treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Administration advice:

• Initial dose should be limited to the recommended amount.
• Any necessary dose titration should be implemented slowly.
• If administration of this drug is discontinued for several days, treatment should be reinstituted using the initial dose.

• Cardiovascular: Blood pressure (at the end of the dosing interval and possibly 2 to 3 hours after dosing)

• Advise patients how to avoid orthostatic and syncopal symptoms associated with lowering of blood pressure and what to do if they occur. Also, encourage patients to avoid situations where injury could result if these symptoms occur.
• Advise patients to report current or previous use of this drug to their ophthalmologist.
• Advise male patients regarding the possibility and seriousness of priapism (can lead to permanent impotence if not treated promptly).
