Usual Adult Dose for Typhoid Prophylaxis

1 capsule orally, on days 1, 3, 5, and 7, 1 hour before a meal, with cold or lukewarm fluids

Comments:

  • The course should be completed at least 1 week before potential exposure to S. typhi.
  • Efficacy has been shown to persist for at least 5 years
  • Routine immunization is not recommended.
  • Immunization is recommended for travelers to areas with a recognized risk, persons with close exposure to a S. typhi carrier, and laboratory workers who work frequently with S. typhi.

6 years and older:

  • The recommended re-immunization dose consisting of 4 capsules taken on alternate days be given every 5 years under conditions of repeated or continued exposure to typhoid fever.

Precautions

Safety and efficacy have not been established in patients younger than 6 years.

Administration advice:

  • Take with cold or lukewarm drink, approximately 1 hour before food.
  • Do not chew.
  • Swallow as soon as possible after placing in mouth.

Storage requirements:
  • Keep refrigerated at all times.

Patient advice:
  • It is essential that all 4 doses be taken at the prescribed alternate day schedule to obtain maximum protection.
  • Not all people will be protected from typhoid fever; take precautions to avoid exposure.
