What is Fecal Microbiota Spores, Live?

Fecal microbiota spores, live is used in adults to prevent a Clostridium difficile infection from coming back.

Fecal microbiota spores, live is only used after completion of an antibiotic treatment course for a recurrent Clostridium difficile infection.

Fecal microbiota spores, live is not used to treat an active Clostridium difficile infection.

Fecal microbiota spores, live may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Warnings

Tell your doctor if you have or ever had:

  • an allergy to any foods or drugs;
  • have other medical conditions;
  • an active or chronic infection; o
  • kidney disease.

Fecal microbiota spores, live is made from human fecal matter and may contain viruses or other infectious agents. Ask your doctor about any possible risk.

It is not known if fecal microbiota spores, live will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

Ask a doctor if it is safe to breastfeed while using this medicine.

How should I use Fecal Microbiota Spores, Live

Use Fecal Microbiota Spores, Live (Oral) exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the medicine exactly as directed.

Your doctor will perform tests to make sure fecal microbiota spores, live is the right treatment for you.

Fecal microbiota spores, live is given as part of a treatment course. The following must be completed before you begin taking fecal microbiota spores, live:

  • 2 to 4 days before first dose: finish antibiotic therapy course.
  • 1 day (at least 8 hours) before the first dose: drink 10 oz (296 mL) of magnesium citrate or the laxative that has been recommended by your doctor. Do not eat or drink except for a small amount of water after taking the laxative.
  • On day of first dose and following doses: take the medicine on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before the first meal of the day.

Swallow the capsule whole and do not crush, chew, break, or open it.

Fecal microbiota spores, live is taken as 4 capsules daily for 3 days in a row. Follow your doctor's dosing instructions very carefully.

Fecal microbiota spores, live should not be used with other antibiotic medications.

Store at room temperature or refrigerator, away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze.

What should I do if I missed a dose of Fecal Microbiota Spores, Live (Oral)?

Call your doctor for instructions if you miss a dose.

Fecal Microbiota Spores, Live side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficult breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

  • signs of infection--fever, chills, sore throat, body aches, unusual tiredness, loss of appetite, easy bruising or bleeding, severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody.

Common side effects may include:

  • stomach bloating;
  • feeling weak or tired;
  • constipation;
  • diarrhea; or
  • chills.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
