Excipient (pharmacologically inactive substance)

What is it?

Barium sulfate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula BaSO4. It occues as whitle powder, and is often used as a component of white pigments and dyes. Barium sulfate is also in a group of drugs called contrast agents. Barium sulfate works by coating the inside of the esophagus, stomach, or intestines which allows them to be seen more clearly on a CT scan or other radiologic (x-ray) examination. Barium sulfate is used to help diagnose certain disorders of the esophagus, stomach, or intestines. Barium sulfate has very low toxicity due to its insolubility. Barium sufate may be used an excipient in pharmaceuticals products, as well.
