I have been on lisinopril 80 mg for five years. My blood pressure never went below 155/90. 2 weeks ago he changed it to 20mgLisinopril-HTCZ 12.5 mg. I told him I'm allergic to hydrochlorothiazide but he said "It's not much. You'll be fine." We argued a bit, but he refused to change it. Well, I wasn't fine. I had severe diarrhea, vomiting, swelling in neck and face. I contacted his nurse multiple times, but he still refused to change it. He refused to change it unless I went to ER and got documentation that I'm allergic to sulfa drugs, than ER would put me on a different blood pressure med, than I could make appt. with him for a new prescription. ER said they could only treat life-threatening emergencies. They had no way to test for sulfa allergies. And it was up to him to change the medication.
I called ER medical records and they had records of my allergy to hydralazine that caused anaphylaxis, putting me in ER in 2019. They faxed it to doctor, but it took three more days for him to contact me, even though I called daily. I was scared to stop taking it, and I ended up becoming so dehydrated, my blood pressure dropped from 165/110 to 108/70. I was so weak, my pulse was racing, sweating, the sickest I have been in years. I started getting things together to call an ambulance. About 5 minutes before calling an ambulance, my PCP's nurse called and said they got documentation from ER, so they called in new prescription. The prescription is losartan 100 mg. I'm afraid it's too high, and if I have an allergic reaction to it, he will refuse to change it. Plus, our pharmacist wouldn't let me pick it up till we had a consultation. At the consult, he said if I'm allergic to hydrochlorothiazide, I could have a similar reaction to losartan. He said he had to have my OK to fill it, not only to cover his butt, but to make sure I knew this and would be aware of this.
My roomate gave me some 20 mg of lisinopril he no longer takes, so I'm taking that twice a day. I no longer trust my PCP and am looking for a new one after 20 years with him.
I can't get into a Cardiologist until April.
I am allergic to amlodipine, naproxen sodium, hydralazine, contrast dye and sulfa drugs. Med. history: hypertension, COPD, hyperhomocystienemia, Barretts Esophagus, Osteopenia and decreased kidney function.
I didn't call 911 when dehydrated. I stopped the meds, and tried to rehydrate at home with PediaLite. I still feel very weak and shaky and just not right. I should have called 911. I was stupid not to. Don't ever be like me.
Knowing all of this... do you feel 100 mg of losartan for me to start with is too high?
High blood pressure - is 100 mg of losartan a safe dose to start with?
