If you experience side effects from Ofev such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, it may help to avoid the following foods and drinks:
- Alcohol or caffeine
- Brassicas, such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, cabbage, collards, or Bok choy
- Fried or greasy foods, such as French fries, burgers, and fried chicken
- High-fiber foods, such as beans, lentils, nuts, or whole grains
- Milk or milk products
- Spicy foods, such as chili
- Sugar-free candy made with alcohols such as xylitol.
Instead, you should eat foods that are gentle on your stomach, such as:
- Applesauce
- Bananas or canned fruit such as applesauce, peaches, or pears
- Broiled or baked (not fried) chicken without the skin
- Broth made with chicken, beef, or vegetables
- Farina or oatmeal
- Gelatin (Jell-O)
- Pasta, white rice, or white bread
- Popsicles or sherbet
- Potatoes, peeled and boiled
- Yogurt
- White toast, crackers, or pretzels.
The BRAT diet (bananas, rice [white], applesauce, and toast) has been shown to help the symptoms of diarrhea. Protein found in foods such as lean meat, eggs, and fish also helps to reduce intestinal side effects. If you are unable to eat 25 to 30 grams of protein from food, considering supplementing your meal with a protein drink or supplement.
Take Ofev in the middle of the meal, not before you eat or after you finish. This means eating half your meal, taking Ofev, then finishing off your meal.
Make sure you keep up your fluids to prevent dehydration with drinks such as:
- Clear, decaffeinated tea
- Clear soda such as ginger ale
- Cranberry or grape juice
- Electrolyte drinks or sports drinks with electrolytes
- Water.
