Ana-lex (topical/rectal) Pregnancy Warnings
Hydrocortisone-lidocaine has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Animal studies have revealed evidence of teratogenicity when corticosteroids are administered orally or potent steroids are applied topically. Animal studies have failed to reveal evidence of fetotoxicity following administration of lidocaine up to 6.6 times the human dose. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Hydrocortisone-lidocaine is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk. Corticosteroids should not be used extensively on pregnant patients, in large amounts or for extended periods of time.
