Carcinoid Syndrome Diarrhea is one of the most common symptoms of carcinoid syndrome, which occurs in a percentage of patients with carcinoid tumors. Carcinoid tumors develop from hormone producing cells of the neuroendocrine system therefore release large quantities of hormones such as serotonin, tachykinins and vasoactive peptides. These hormones cause the carcinoid syndrome symptoms including diarrhea.
