Central Venous Catherterization is when a long, soft plastic tube, called a catheter, is placed into a large vein in the arm, neck, leg or chest. The tube is threaded through this vein until it reaches a large vein in the heart. It is used to administer medication or fluids, obtain blood tests and measure central venous pressure. It usually remains in place for long periods of time.
