Other names: CMV Colitis; Cytomegalovirus Colitis; Cytomegalovirus Gastroenteritis
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) gastroenteritis is inflammation of the stomach or intestine due to infection with cytomegalovirus. After having an infection with CMV the virus remains dormant or inactive and usually only becomes reactivated if the immune system is weakened in some way, for example if there is an immune disorder or in patients who take medicines for organ transplants or chemotherapy medicines. Gastrointestinal CMV can occur anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon. The infection can cause tissue inflammation, ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding. Symptoms of CMV gastroenteritis can be dependant on what part of the gastrointestinal tract is involved and may include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and weight loss.
