Coccidioidomycosis, also called valley fever, is an illness caused by a fungus that is common in some parts of the United States. Most people experience no symptoms or symptoms that resemble a mild flu. In a very small proportion of people the infection can spread from the lungs to the membranes that protect the brain and spinal cord (meninges) and cause more severe conditions such as meningitis.
