A complication of hip replacement surgery can be deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE). These are caused by blood clots forming or becoming lodged in a blood vessel and have serious health consequences. If the blood clot forms in the deep veins it is called a deep vein thrombosis and a pulmonary embolism develops if a blood clot travels to the pulmonary arteries causing an occlusion. Surgery, general anesthesia and immobility are risk factors for DVT and PE, therefore during hip replacement surgery and recovery it is important have prophylactic systems in place to reduce the risk of a DVT or PE occurring.
