Dyslipidemia occurs when the lipid levels in the blood are abnormally high or low. It is mostly the elevation of lipid concentrations that is the main concern in developed countries. Dyslipidemia can be an increase in either low-density lipoproteins, plasma cholesterol, triglycerides, or an increase in both plasma cholesterol and triglycerides. A decrease in high-density lipoprotein is also a dyslipidemia. Causes of dyslipidemia are genetic, other medical conditions or lifestyle. Dyslipidemia can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and peripheral arterial disease and therefore treatment goals are to correct the balance of lipid levels and therefore reduce the health risks associated with dyslipidemia.
