Neutropenia is an abnormally low level of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell which fights infection. Neutrophils are made by stem cells in the bone marrow. Radiation can cause neutropenia by affecting the way bone marrow works and lowering the production of neutrophils. Having neutropenia increases the risk of developing infections.
