Pre-exposure prophylaxis for COVID-19 is when medication is taken before you have been exposed to a person with COVID-19, to help build up protection against COVID-19, and therefore reduce the chance of severe COVID-19 or dying.
Pre-exposure prophylaxis for COVID-19 is usually only used for specific patients:
- who have moderate to severe immune compromise so may not get an adequate immune response to COVID-19 vaccination.
- are unable to have a COVID-19 vaccinations series, for medical reasons or severe allergic reaction to COVID-19 vaccines or components of the vaccine.
