Usual Adult Dose for Influenza Prophylaxis

0.5 mL intramuscularly once.

Usual Pediatric Dose for Influenza Prophylaxis

6 to 35 months: Two 0.25 mL intramuscular injections approximately 1 month apart
36 months to 9 years: Two 0.5 mL intramuscular injections approximately 1 month apart
10 years or older: A single 0.5 mL intramuscular injection

Precautions

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

  • Severe hypersensitivity reactions to previous vaccination, egg proteins, or any vaccine ingredient
  • Life-threatening reactions after any previous influenza vaccine

Safety and efficacy have not been established in patients younger than 6 months.

Administration advice:

  • The deltoid is the preferred administration site in adults
  • The anterolateral aspect of the thigh is the preferred administration site in infants.
  • The deltoid muscle of the upper arm is the preferred administration site in toddlers and young children.
  • Do not administer in the gluteal region or any area where a major nerve trunk may be.
  • Do not administer if particulates or discoloration are present.

Storage requirements:
  • Refrigerate; do not freeze

Reconstitution/preparation techniques:
  • Shake well prior to administration (syringe/single dose vial) or before withdrawing a dose (multi-dose vial)
