Drug Class: Calcium channel blocking agents
Usual Adult Dose for Hypertension
Usual dose: 2.5 mg orally once daily
Maximum dose: 5 mg orally once daily
Comments:
- Adjust dose according to blood pressure goals.
- Wait 7 to 14 days between dose adjustments; if needed, may titrate more rapidly if patient is assessed frequently.
Usual Pediatric Dose for Hypertension
6 to 17 years old: 1.25 to 2.5 mg orally once daily
Comments:
- Doses over 2.5 mg per day have not been studied in pediatric patients.
Renal Dose Adjustments
No adjustment recommended.
Liver Dose Adjustments
- A lower initial dose of 1.25 mg orally once a day may be required in hepatic impairment.
- Titrate slowly in severe hepatic impairment.
Dose Adjustments
Small, fragile, or elderly patients may be started on 1.25 mg orally once a day.
- This dose may be used when adding this drug to other antihypertensives.
Precautions
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
- Hypersensitivity to amlodipine
Safety and efficacy have not been established in patients younger than 6 years; this drug is not recommended for use in these patients.
