Usual Adult Dose for Bacterial Vaginosis

2 g orally once

Use: For the treatment of bacterial vaginosis in female patients

Usual Adult Dose for Trichomoniasis

2 g orally once

Comments:

  • Sexual partners of infected patients should be treated with the same dose at the same time to prevent reinfection as trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease with potentially serious sequelae.

Use: For the treatment of trichomoniasis due to Trichomonas vaginalis

Usual Pediatric Dose for Bacterial Vaginosis

12 years or older: 2 g orally once

Use: For the treatment of bacterial vaginosis in female patients

Usual Pediatric Dose for Trichomoniasis

12 years or older: 2 g orally once

Comments:

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

  • Known hypersensitivity to the active component or other nitroimidazole derivatives
  • Cockayne syndrome

Safety and efficacy have not been established in patients younger than 12 years.

Administration advice:

  • Administer a single packet of granules; sprinkle the entire contents of the packet onto applesauce, yogurt, or pudding.
  • Consume the entire mixture of food and granules within 30 minutes of preparation; do not chew or crunch the granules.
  • May administer without regard to the timing of meals
  • After consuming this drug, may drink a glass of water (to help with swallowing)

Reconstitution/preparation techniques:
  • The entire contents of 1 packet should be sprinkled onto applesauce, yogurt, or pudding; the granules will not dissolve.
  • The granules are not intended to be dissolved in any liquid.

General:
  • A single packet of granules contains 2 g of this drug.
  • To reduce the development of drug-resistant organisms and maintain effective therapy, this drug should be used only to treat or prevent infections proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria.
  • Culture and susceptibility information should be considered when selecting/modifying antibacterial therapy or, if no data are available, local epidemiology and susceptibility patterns may be considered when selecting empiric therapy.

Patient advice:
  • Read the US FDA-approved patient labeling (Patient Information and Instructions for Use).
  • Do not consume alcoholic beverages or products containing ethanol or propylene glycol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after completing therapy; nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dizziness, and headache may occur.
  • Do not breastfeed during treatment or for 96 hours after dose administration.
