How is Herceptin Injection and Herceptin Hylecta administered?

Answers by TheMediTary.Com - Last updated: 14-Jul-2023

Herceptin Injection

Herceptin injection (trastuzumab) is administered as an intravenous infusion.

  • Intravenous (IV) means Herceptin is given into your vein through an IV line. They can use a vein in your wrist, elbow or sometimes in the back of your hand.
  • Infusion means that the Herceptin goes into your bloodstream over a period of time, usually 90 minutes for the first time, and in some cases subsequent doses can be administered over 30 minutes.
  • Herceptin should NOT be given as a rapid intravenous (IV) injection, which is sometimes called an IV “push” or “bolus”.
  • Herceptin should be administered by a health care professional.

How is Herceptin injection given and stored?

Herceptin injection is supplied as lyophilized powder which needs to reconstituted into a solution for administration

150 mg Single-dose vial (Herceptin injection)

  • The Herceptin injection single-dose vial is a lyophilized powder that should be reconstituted with 7.4 mL of sterile water for injection.
  • Herceptin vials should be stored in the refrigerator until time of reconstitution.
  • Once reconstituted the resulting solution contains 21 mg/mL trastuzumab.
  • This does not contain a preservative so if not used immediately must be stored between 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F) and discarded after 24 hours if not used. Do NOT freeze.

420 mg Multiple-dose vial (Herceptin injection)

  • The 420mg multiple-dose vial is a lyophilized powder that should be reconstituted with 20 mL of bacteriostatic water for injection (BWFI), USP, containing 1.1% benzyl alcohol as a preservative.
  • Herceptin vials should be stored in the refrigerator until time of reconstitution.
  • Once reconstituted the resulting solution contains 21 mg/mL trastuzumab.
  • The reconstituted Herceptin should be stored in the refrigerator at 2°C to 8° C (36°F to 46°F) for up to a maximum of 28 days after this time it should be destroyed. Do NOT freeze.

Herceptin Hylecta

Herceptin Hylecta (trastuzumab and hyaluronidase-oysk) is administered as a subcutaneous injection.

  • A subcutaneous injection is injected under the skin, and should be given over approximately 2 to 5 minutes.
  • Herceptin Hylecta should NOT be given intravenously (IV).
  • Herceptin Hylecta should be administered by a health care professional.
  • The Herceptin Hylecta injection should be given into the thigh, alternating between the left and right for each new injection.
  • The injection should be given into healthy skin, avoiding old injection sites by at least 2.5 cm and avoiding areas of skin that are red, bruised, tender or any moles or scars.

How is Herceptin Hylecta given and stored?

Herceptin Hylecta (600 mg trastuzumab and 10,000 units hyaluronidase)

  • Herceptin Hylecta is a single use, ready to use solution for injection.
  • Herceptin Hylecta should be stored in the refrigerator (2°C to 8°C) until just before use when it can be at room temperature (20°C to 25°C) for up to 4 hours. Do NOT shake or freeze.
