Serious side effects of Patiromer
Along with its needed effects, patiromer may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.
Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking patiromer:
More common
- Drowsiness
- loss of appetite
- mood or mental changes
- muscle spasms (tetany) or twitching
- nausea
- seizures
- trembling
- unusual tiredness or weakness
- vomiting
Other side effects of Patiromer
Some side effects of patiromer may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.

General
The more commonly reported adverse reactions have included constipation, hypomagnesemia, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, and flatulence.
Gastrointestinal
Gastrointestinal events were generally mild to moderate and did not appear to be dose related. They often resolved spontaneously or with treatment. During clinical studies, the most commonly reported adverse reactions leading to discontinuation included vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and flatulence.[Ref]
Common (1% to 10%): Constipation, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, flatulence
Frequency not reported: Vomiting[Ref]
Hypersensitivity
Uncommon (0.1% to 1%): Mild to moderate hypersensitivity reactions including edema of the lips[Ref]
Metabolic
Common (1% to 10%): Hypomagnesemia, hypokalemia[Ref]
