Barium sulfate has not been formally assigned to a pregnancy category by the FDA. Animal studies on barium sulfate have not been reported. Radiation is known to cause harm to the unborn fetus exposed in utero. Therefore, radiographic procedures should only be used when, in the judgement of the physician, radiographic procedures are deemed essential to the welfare of the pregnant patient.

The manufacturer has reported that barium sulfate is not systemically absorbed. Therefore, barium sulfate products may be used during lactation.
