Other names: GA
Geographic atrophy (GA) is the advanced stage of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is a condition when a small area in the central portion of the retina responsible for central vision is damaged, this causes moderate and severe loss of central vision in aging adults.
Geographic atrophy is late-stage age-related macular degeneration when there are large areas of damaged tissue in the retina causing central blind spots in the visual field in aging adults. Geographic atrophy is a progressive disease, and the region of damaged tissue in the retina expands slowly over several years until the central vision may be lost.
Treatments of geographic atrophy aim to slow the progression of the disease to maintain better vision for a longer period of time.
