Acute gout (or a gout flare) is an intensely painful and disabling inflammatory arthritis, usually involving a single joint but occasionally involving two or more joints. Gout is caused by having higher-than-normal levels of uric acid in your body which causes uric acid to accumulate around joints and form crystals. These crystals cause the joint to swell and become inflamed.
