Other names: Opioid Dependence - Induction
Induction of opiate dependence treatment is the first weeks of treatment when a clinician determines the dose appropriate for the patient by increasing the dose gradually until cravings are reduced, there is good adherence and minimal side effects. Once the patient has been stabilized on a suitable dose they move into the maintenance phase of treatment, which involves the gradual tapering off of the replacement opioid. Opioid dependence treatment is drug therapy for patients who are opiate dependant and wish to discontinue their opiate use. Treatment involves replacing the drug they are dependent on with a longer acting opioid which reduces the drug withdrawal symptoms, reduces cravings and does not have the euphoric effect.
