An atherothrombotic event is characterized by a sudden, unpredictable, atherosclerotic plaque disruption (rupture or erosion), and thrombus (blood clot) formation. It is the major cause of acute coronary syndromes and cardiovascular death. Atherothrombotic events can be reduced or prevented.
