Zioptan Side Effects

Note: This document contains side effect information about tafluprost ophthalmic. Some dosage forms listed on this page may not apply to the brand name Zioptan.

Applies to tafluprost ophthalmic: ophthalmic solution.

Serious side effects of Zioptan

Along with its needed effects, tafluprost ophthalmic (the active ingredient contained in Zioptan) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking tafluprost ophthalmic:

Less common

  • Blurred vision
  • burning, dry, or itching eyes
  • decreased vision
  • eye discharge or excessive tearing
  • eye pain
  • redness, pain, or swelling of the eye, eyelid, or inner lining of the eyelid

Other side effects of Zioptan

Some side effects of tafluprost ophthalmic may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.

Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

More common

  • Headache
  • stinging or irritation of the eye

Less common

  • Cough
  • darker color of the eyelashes
  • dry eyes
  • increased growth of the eyelashes

For Healthcare Professionals

Applies to tafluprost ophthalmic: ophthalmic solution.

Ocular

Common (1% to 10%): Ocular stinging/irritation, ocular pruritus including allergic conjunctivitis, cataract, dry eye, ocular pain, eyelash darkening, growth of eyelashes, blurred vision, increased lacrimation, eyelid erythema, foreign body sensation in the eyes, photophobia, reduced visual acuity, punctate keratitis, eye discharge, eyelid edema, iris hyperpigmentation, conjunctival/ocular hyperemia

Uncommon (0.1 to 1%): Blepharal pigmentation, asthenopia, conjunctival edema, blepharitis, anterior chamber cells, ocular discomfort, anterior chamber flare, conjunctival pigmentation, conjunctival follicles, allergic conjunctivitis

Very rare (less than 0.01%): Corneal calcification (in association with the use of phosphate containing eye drops in some patients with significantly damaged corneas)

Frequency not reported: Deepening of the eyelid sulcus, iritis/uveitis[Ref]

Nervous system

Common (1% to 10%): Headache[Ref]

General

The most commonly reported side effect was conjunctival/ocular hyperemia.[Ref]

Genitourinary

Common (1% to 10%): Urinary tract infection[Ref]

Respiratory

Common (1% to 10%): Cough

Postmarketing reports: Exacerbation of asthma, dyspnea[Ref]

Dermatologic

Uncommon (0.1% to 1%): Hypertrichosis of the eyelid[Ref]

Immunologic

Common (1% to 10%): Common cold[Ref]
