Uses Warnings Before Taking Dosage Side effects Interactions FAQ

1. How it works

  • Soolantra is a topical ivermectin cream that may be used to treat inflammation caused by rosacea. Rosacea is a common inflammatory skin condition that causes redness and a rash, usually on the nose and cheeks, and sometimes on the forehead.
  • Experts aren't exactly sure how Soolantra works but suggest it has an anti-inflammatory effect. The active ingredient in Soolantra, ivermectin, has anti-parasitic and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Soolantra belongs to the class of medicines known as topical anti-infectives. It may also be called an anti-rosacea agent.

2. Upsides

  • Approved for the treatment of inflammation (redness) caused by rosacea.
  • Only needs to be applied once a day.
  • Only a pea-sized amount should be applied to each affected area.
  • Available in 30 gram, 45 gram, and 60 gram tubes.
  • Supplied with a child-resistant cap, but keep out of the reach of children.

3. Downsides

If you are between the ages of 18 and 60, take no other medication or have no other medical conditions, side effects you are more likely to experience include:

  • Skin burning or irritation are the most common side effects reported.
  • People should not use Soolantra if they are allergic to ivermectin or any of the other ingredients contained in this medicine. This cream is not for oral or vaginal use and should not be applied to the eyes.
  • Pregnant women should only use Soolantra if the benefits justify the risk because there are no adequate studies in pregnant women. There is a lack of trials investigating the use of topical ivermectin in breastfeeding women, but oral ivermectin is excreted into human milk in low concentrations. Women should either not breastfeed or discontinue Soolantra if they are breastfeeding.
  • It is not known if Soolantra is safe or effective in children and young adults under the age of 18 years because it has not been studied in this population.

Note: In general, seniors or children, people with certain medical conditions (such as liver or kidney problems, heart disease, diabetes, seizures) or people who take other medications are more at risk of developing a wider range of side effects. View complete list of side effects

4. Tips

  • Wash and dry your hands first then apply a pea-sized amount to each affected area of the face (such as the chin, nose, each cheek, or forehead) once daily. Spread as a thin layer, avoiding the eyes and lips.
  • Keep your tube of cream out of reach of children.
  • Mild skin burning and irritation are common side effects. Stop using the cream and talk with your doctor if you experience severe or unusual side effects, or if you do not notice an improvement in your rosacea within 12 weeks. Soolantra takes about 2 weeks to have a noticeable effect on rosacea symptoms.
  • Store at room temperature, 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C).

5. Response and effectiveness

  • Two randomized clinical trials investigated the effectiveness of Soolantra for treating rosacea. 1371 patients aged 18 years and older were treated once daily for 12 weeks with either Soolantra cream or an inactive placebo cream. 96% were Caucasian and 67% were female. 79% had moderate rosacea and 21% had rosacea that was classed as severe.
  • After 12 weeks 38.4% to 40.1% experienced an improvement in their rosacea to clear or almost clear, compared to 11.6% to 18.8% with placebo.
  • A 64.9% to 65.7% reduction in the number of inflammatory lesions was reported in those using Soolantra compared with a 41.6% to 43.4% reduction in those using the placebo cream.
  • Soolantra starts to work within two weeks, but up to 12 weeks may be needed for the full effects to be seen.
  • Contains ivermectin 1%.

6. Interactions

  • Soolantra is unlikely to interact with any other drugs that are taken orally because it is applied topically to the skin.
  • Laboratory studies have shown that Soolantra does not inhibit or induce cytochrome p450 enzymes.
  • Refer to the prescribing information for any new interactions. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all medicines you use, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
