Drug Detail:Indapamide (Indapamide [ in-dap-a-mide ])
Drug Class: Thiazide diuretics
Initial dose: 2.5 mg orally once a day.
Initial dose: 1.25 mg orally once a day.
Indapamide should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment as it may induce azotemia in patients with severe renal insufficiency.
Indapamide diuresis may induce hepatic encephalopathy in some patients with severe liver disease. Mental status monitoring is recommended in patients with liver impairment.
The dose may be increased to 5 mg in 1 week as necessary to provide diuresis in patients with edema.
In patients with hypertension, the dose may be increased to 2.5 mg in 1 month and to 5 mg after another month as necessary.
Clinical studies of indapamide did not include sufficient numbers of subjects aged 65 and over to determine whether they respond differently from younger subjects. Other reported clinical experience has not identified differences in responses between the elderly and younger patients. In general, dose selection for an elderly patient should be cautious, usually starting at the low end of the dosing range, reflecting the greater frequency of decreased hepatic, renal or cardiac function, and of concomitant disease or other drug therapy.
Safety and effectiveness have not been established in pediatric patients (less than 18 years of age).
Data not available
The maximum recommended dose is 5 mg per day.
Periodic monitoring of electrolytes is recommended, particularly in elderly patients and in patients receiving a high dose.
