Serious side effects of Cromolyn ophthalmic
Along with its needed effects, cromolyn ophthalmic may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.
Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur while taking cromolyn ophthalmic:
Rare
- Rash or redness around the eyes
- swelling of the membrane covering the white part of the eye, redness of the white part of the eye, styes, or other eye irritation not present before therapy
Other side effects of Cromolyn ophthalmic
Some side effects of cromolyn ophthalmic may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.

- Burning or stinging of eye (mild and temporary)
Less common or rare
- Dryness or puffiness around the eye
- watering or itching of eye (increased)

General
The most commonly reported side effect includes eye irritation such as burning/stinging.[Ref]
Ocular
Uncommon: Conjunctival infection; watery eyes, itchy eyes, dryness around the eye, puffy eyes, eye irritation, styes, swelling of the eyelids, conjunctiva swelling[Ref]
Swelling of the eyelids or the conjunctiva has been reported and is thought to be due to a hypersensitivity to the preservative, benzalkonium chloride.[Ref]
Hypersensitivity
Rare: Immediate hypersensitivity reactions including edema, rash, dyspnea[Ref]
