Serious side effects of Elestat
Along with its needed effects, epinastine ophthalmic (the active ingredient contained in Elestat) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.
Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking epinastine ophthalmic:
More common
- Burning sensation in the eye
- increase in blood flow to the whites of the eyes
- redness, itching, pain, swelling, or other irritation of the eye
Other side effects of Elestat
Some side effects of epinastine ophthalmic may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.

- some side effects were similar to problem being treated- Body aches or pain
- chills
- cough
- difficulty with breathing
- ear congestion
- fever
- headache
- loss of voice
- nasal congestion
- runny nose
- sneezing
- sore throat
- unusual tiredness or weakness
Less common
- some side effects were similar to problem being treated- Congestion
- hoarseness
- increased cough
- pain or tenderness around the eyes and cheekbones
- shortness of breath
- stuffy nose
- tender, swollen glands in the neck
- tightness of the chest or wheezing
- trouble with swallowing
- troubled breathing
- voice changes

The most common ocular side effects reported were a burning sensation following instillation, folliculosis, hyperemia, and pruritus of the eye.[Ref]
Ocular
Common: Burning, irritation, pruritus
Uncommon: Hyperemia, discharge, dryness, visual disturbance
Postmarketing reports: Increased lacrimation, eye pain[Ref]
Respiratory
Uncommon: Asthma, nasal irritation, rhinitis[Ref]
Nervous system
Uncommon: Headache, dysgeusia[Ref]
