Oral route (Tablet)
Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with antipsychotic drugs are at an increased risk of death. Pimavanserin is not approved for the treatment of patients with dementia-related psychosis unrelated to the hallucinations and delusions associated with Parkinson's disease psychosis.
Serious side effects of Nuplazid
Along with its needed effects, pimavanserin (the active ingredient contained in Nuplazid) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.
Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking pimavanserin:
Incidence not known
- Chest pain, discomfort, or tightness
- fainting
- irregular or slow heart rate
- large, hive-like swelling on face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet, or genitals
- trouble breathing
Other side effects of Nuplazid
Some side effects of pimavanserin may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.

- Bloating or swelling of the face, arms, hands, lower legs, or feet
- confusion
- nausea
- rapid weight gain
- unusual weight gain or loss
Less common
- Change in walking and balance
- clumsiness or unsteadiness
- difficulty having a bowel movement

- Sleepiness or unusual drowsiness
