What do I need to tell my doctor BEFORE I take Megestrol Oral Suspension?

• If you have an allergy to megestrol acetate or any other part of megestrol oral suspension.
• If you are allergic to megestrol oral suspension; any part of megestrol oral suspension; or any other drugs, foods, or substances. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had.
• If you are taking dofetilide.
• If you are pregnant or may be pregnant. Do not take megestrol oral suspension to help raise feelings of hunger if you are pregnant.
• If you are breast-feeding. Do not breast-feed while you take megestrol oral suspension.

What are some things I need to know or do while I take Megestrol Oral Suspension?

• Tell all of your health care providers that you take megestrol oral suspension. This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.
• Have blood work checked as you have been told by the doctor. Talk with the doctor.
• High blood sugar has happened with megestrol oral suspension. This includes diabetes that is new or worse.
• Check your blood sugar as you have been told by your doctor.
• This medicine may lower how much steroid your body makes. This may happen while taking megestrol oral suspension or after you stop taking it. Tell your doctor if you have a very bad infection, surgery, or injury. Call your doctor right away if you have very bad dizziness or passing out, very upset stomach or throwing up, or feeling very tired or weak. You may need to take a steroid drug. Talk with your doctor.
• This medicine may cause harm to the unborn baby if you take it while you are pregnant.
• If you are able to get pregnant, your doctor may have you take a pregnancy test before starting megestrol oral suspension to show that you are NOT pregnant.
• Use birth control that you can trust to prevent pregnancy while taking megestrol oral suspension.
• If you are pregnant or you get pregnant while taking megestrol oral suspension, call your doctor right away.

How is this medicine (Megestrol Oral Suspension) best taken?

Use megestrol oral suspension as ordered by your doctor. Read all information given to you. Follow all instructions closely.

• Keep taking megestrol oral suspension as you have been told by your doctor or other health care provider, even if you feel well.
• Shake well before use.
• Measure liquid doses carefully. Use the measuring device that comes with megestrol oral suspension. If there is none, ask the pharmacist for a device to measure megestrol oral suspension.
• Make sure you have the right liquid; there is more than one strength.

What do I do if I miss a dose?

• Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it.
• If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time.
• Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.

What are some side effects that I need to call my doctor about right away?

WARNING/CAUTION: Even though it may be rare, some people may have very bad and sometimes deadly side effects when taking a drug. Tell your doctor or get medical help right away if you have any of the following signs or symptoms that may be related to a very bad side effect:

• Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat.
• Signs of high blood sugar like confusion, feeling sleepy, more thirst, more hungry, passing urine more often, flushing, fast breathing, or breath that smells like fruit.
• Signs of Cushing's disease like weight gain in the upper back or belly, moon face, very bad headache, or slow healing.
• Signs of a weak adrenal gland like a very bad upset stomach or throwing up, very bad dizziness or passing out, muscle weakness, feeling very tired, mood changes, not hungry, or weight loss.
• Signs of high blood pressure like very bad headache or dizziness, passing out, or change in eyesight.
• Shortness of breath, a big weight gain, or swelling in the arms or legs.
• Vaginal bleeding that is not normal.
• Mood changes.
• Lowered interest in sex.
• Not able to get or keep an erection.
• Feeling very tired or weak.
• Fever.
• Blood clots have happened with megestrol oral suspension. Sometimes, these blood clots have been deadly. Call your doctor right away if you have chest, arm, back, neck, or jaw pain or pressure; coughing up blood; numbness or weakness on 1 side of your body, trouble speaking or thinking, change in balance, or change in eyesight; shortness of breath; or swelling, warmth, or pain in the leg or arm.

What are some other side effects of Megestrol Oral Suspension?

All drugs may cause side effects. However, many people have no side effects or only have minor side effects. Call your doctor or get medical help if any of these side effects or any other side effects bother you or do not go away:

• Upset stomach or throwing up.
• Headache.
• More hungry.
• Weight gain.
• Trouble sleeping.
• Gas.
• Feeling tired or weak.
• Hair loss.
• Hot flashes.
• Sweating a lot.
• Diarrhea.

• Store at room temperature.
• Store in a dry place. Do not store in a bathroom.
• Protect from heat.
• Keep all drugs in a safe place. Keep all drugs out of the reach of children and pets.
• Throw away unused or expired drugs. Do not flush down a toilet or pour down a drain unless you are told to do so. Check with your pharmacist if you have questions about the best way to throw out drugs. There may be drug take-back programs in your area.
